Tank Requirements

    • Tank Size: Minimum 250 gallons (946 L) for juveniles; adults need 500+ gallons or indoor ponds.
    • Water Parameters:
      • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C) – stable warmth is critical.
      • pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
      • Hardness: Soft to moderate (4–12 dGH).
    • Habitat: Open swimming space with minimal decor. Use sandy substrate and floating plants (e.g., Water Hyacinth) to mimic Amazonian rivers.

    Diet

    • High-Protein Diet: Hikari Carnivore Pellets (staple) + live/frozen shrimp, feeder fish (occasional treats).
    • Avoid Overfeeding: Feed juveniles daily, adults 3–4x weekly to prevent obesity.

    Compatibility

    • Solo or Selective: House alone or with large, non-aggressive species:
      • Tank Mates: Black Pacu, Giant Gourami, or Plecostomus (24+ inches).
      • Avoid: Small fish (they’ll be eaten!) or territorial cichlids.
